What is Mega Purple?
Mega Purple is an additive used by most wineries in California too enhance and increase the color of their wines. It is a concentrate produced by the Canandaigua Concentrate Co in California from grape skins and juice. It is used to darken wines to make them more appealing, or to enhance the color of different lots of wines to achieve a consistent color.
At Chateau Thomas Winery, we do not use Mega Purple or any other color-enhancing agent as we feel that the customer should be able to see the natural color of the wine without artificial means. Except for tannins added at fermentation and malolactic bacteria added to insure timely onset of malolactic fermentation, we employ no unnatural or unnecessary agents to the wine. Our wines are natural and just as they should be! Wine acids are sometimes used to balance the acidity of the wine as California grapes are sometimes low in acid.
